Tour to Machu Picchu

6.00
An early start today to travel 80km from Cuzco to one of the most amazing sights of South America, the pre-Columbian Inca site in Peru. We decided to go there by bus and train as most tourists do who don’t want to trek.

Sitting in the tourist bus, driving the windy roads through the Peruvian mountains towards Machu Picchu. Every now and then the bus stops and locals try to sell hats, souvenirs, water or sweets.

Just got off the bus and have to take the train now for the next 1.5 hours. All I see are tourists at the train station. Unbelievable how many different people have travelled the long way to see this World Heritage Site. The train is very comfortable and the time goes quickly as we pass a small river through a lush valley.

We are in the middle of the chaos at the end station Agua Caliente, just another short bus ride away from Machu Picchu. Here we meet our guide for the tour we have booked together with the bus and train.

Here we are! After a short steep walk up the hill we see the sight so many dream to see once in their life. The city sits in a saddle between two mountains, with a fantastic view down two valleys. The sight is breathtaking!

Even though I’m not a big fan of historical stories, I find the tour through Machu Picchu extremely interesting and I’m very impressed about what I hear.
The Incan built city has been discovered in 1911. Archaeologists estimate that about 1200 people could have lived in the area around AD 1430, though many theorize it was most likely a retreat for Incan rulers. Because of its isolation from the rest of Peru, living in the area full time would require travelling great distances just to reach the nearest village. The times it took them to walk the distances just sound unbelievable!
We hear a lot about how the Incas lived, about their rituals and about their everyday life. A lot of information is interpretation, as there is no written facts about Machu Picchu, which makes the whole place even more mystic.

The tour is finished and after exploring the Temple of the Sun and taking some last looks at this amazing construction, we make our way down to Agua Caliente.

Back on the train for the long journey back to Cusco. Although we found that there is a lot of commercial business around Machu Picchu and 10000 of people travelling there every they, it is still an unique place and worth every dollar we spent on it!
