The Plantation House, Salento




Surprisingly, the Plantation House in Salento is not listed in the Columbian Lonely Planet guide book, although it is a great bet for cheap hostel accommodation when spending a few days in Columbia’s  Zona Cafetera.

The Plantation House is located upon the hill looking over the town of Salento. Only a 10 minute walk from the charming plaza of Salento, the hostel is surrounded by lush vegetation, coffee plantations and offers spectacular views over the hills of the Zona Cafetera.

We booked a double with shared bathroom, located in a small wooden cabin behind the main building, which meant quiet nights – unlike the rooms next to the communal area. Even though the bedroom itself was tiny and the building resembling more a garden shed, it gave us a warm, homely feeling. The bed, which takes two third of the room, was very comfortable and clean.

The shared bathroom has basic plumbing and a hit and miss hot water supply. The bathrooms next to the kitchen are much more reliable. There is a communal kitchen, a small lounge with internet access (at additional cost)  and a book exchange.

The Plantation House Hostel in Salento also offers free coffee, laundry service and daily coffee tours to the owners young coffee farm – a 10minute walk away and a good morning activity. Tim, the English owner, is very informative and approachable for questions regarding local attractions and Columbia as a whole. You get the impression Tim really lives for his family, hostel and coffee farm.

Salento is a picturesque town and coupled with our cosy accommdodation at the Plantation House Hostel meant our orginal plan of two days quickly turned to a week long stay.

The Good:

  • Peaceful location
  • Helpful staff
  • Good value for money

The not so Good:

  • Small, basic accommodation
