The Base, Christchurch



Centrally located, The Base in Christchurch puts you right in the middle of this charming historical city.

The Base is a little rough around the edges; the reception area always seemed busy with new arrivals and staff overwhelmed by the numbers.

Upstairs, a large dingy communial area with TV and a selction of pre school arcade machines occupy the bored looking guests. The dorm room doors open directly onto the lounge, making rooms rather noisy at times.

The room standard is generally OK, but not fantastic. Good locker storage and confy beds help bring this slighty rough and ready room up to date. The bathrooms are pretty gruby and need of a good clean in places. The cleaners seem a little shy on splashing out the bleach.

The hostel provides an airport shuttle, which offers good value and reliable service, with shuttles departing throughout the day.

The Good:

  • Bang in the centre of Christchurch

  • Well priced

The not so Good:

  • Dirty in places
  • Busy, distracted staff
