Sunset Resort, Rarotonga



The Sunset Resort in Rarotonga is a real gem in the budget hotel market. When booked for seven nights, you can secure good deals on this accommodation in the tropical Cook Islands.

On arrival at the airport, we were greeted by our minibus transfer driver in the traditional Cook Islander way, warm smiles (even if was 3am) and flower necklaces placed around our necks.

A short ten minute drive to the west of the island got us to our accommodation in no time, and we are quickly shown to our clean modern living space for the next seven nights.

The room looked brand new and had high quality fittings throughout. The small kitchen was good enough for basic food preparation, and fine for two people. The bathroom was clean and hot water was always available in the spacious shower. Our room’s balcony overlooked the quiet swimming pool area, and was a good shade spot.

Mornings we were entitled to complementary buffet breakfast at the Anchorage restaurant, which consisted of cereals, fresh local fruits, toast and coffee. The over friendly waitress seemed to have a pre-recorded tape playing every morning to greet every guest, which became a little irritating by the second day. Lunches and dinner meals were available at extra cost, but unfortunately they fell short of expectations, being expensive and tasting like cheap microwave meals.

The hotel is located right on the beach, and offers average snorkelling for the location. The current is much stronger on the western coast of the island, so you are better of heading to the calmer, better visibility areas in the south. Snorkelling equipment hire is free for guests, and the equipment is good enough for the requirements.

The Good:

  • Superb value for money
  • Quiet, relaxed atmosphere
  • Next to pristine beach
  • Free DVD hire, airport transfers and snorkel hire

The not so Good:

  • Located away from many restaurants, car/bus needed
  • Better snorkelling elsewhere on the island
  • Lunch and dinner food is poor and over priced
