Leaving for a Round the World Trip
It’s no easy thing, to finally embark on your adventure, after the months of planing and preparation. Depending on your period away from home, you will no doubt have to organise and plan for things whilst you are away. Take time to ensure these are in place – speak to family and friends about the trip and let them know your plans.

Before you leave, purchase a travel guide for the destination and read through the key topics. Read about the countries history, current political situation, climate, currency and average temperatures. Also, find out how far from the airport the mayor cities are. We have always used and recommend the Lonely Planet Guidebooks.
Another good idea is to have your first few nights of cheap accommodation booked if arriving in a completely new country. The last thing you want is to land at an airport late at night and jet lagged with no idea where to go. Book in advance to save the hassle and help you find your feet in your new surroundings.
Once you have booked your accommodation, shoot over to Google maps and print a street map (ensure it has the street names) of the hostel and surrounding area. Useful in case you or more often the taxi driver, gets lost.
Below is a list of other useful tips to help you leave, have with the least hassle and stress:
- Setup online banking for all your accounts, and give a family member/close friend the legal rights to access these accounts on your behalf. No Bank? Get a Visa Card – No Monthly Fees w/ our FREE Direct Deposit, Pay bills, get cash at ATMs & shop.
- Ensure your car remains insured, taxed and road worthy – preferably garaged.
- Make sure your living accommodation is looked after, or rented out until you return.
- Setup mail forwarding to a family member or close friends address.
- Check you have all the correct vaccinations, you may also need booster jabs. It is recommended you speak to a travel doctor to evaluate your vaccination history and arrange and further medication.
- Have foreign currency changed in small bills before arriving at your destination.
- Travel backpacker insurance must be purchased before departing, check the small print, what it really covers and any excess charges.
- Have credit card cancellation steps recorded.
- Have family, friends and emergency contact numbers recorded (not just in your mobile phone).
- Check mobile phone coverage and costs for calls and SMS. Consider purchasing a phone card.
- Setup a Facebook, Skype, Twitter and Flickr account to keep your family and friends up to date.
- Check the countries government website for any immediate warnings or safety advice.
Once you follow these steps, you are ready to embark on your trip! If you are currently travelling, what else would you add?
