La Oveja Negra, Playa Tamarindo
![]()
La Oveja Negra is a relatively new hostel situated just off the main drag in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. You can get to all of Tamarindo’s tourist attractions within seconds from this hostel, but despite the proximity to the town you can get a good night’s sleep.

This hostel is run by a friendly English speaking Argentinean who quickly showed us the room options. The room was spacious, had locker storage and an added bonus, air conditioning. For this price, no other hostel we found offered air con. The rooms are generally clean, although the beds are a little tired. The room has tiny windows and a prison cell like feel to it.
This hostel is full of surf dudes, surf memorabilia litters the hostel – including plenty of sand in the showers! The bathrooms are cleaned every morning, but we found it hard to believe this is a new hostel – the bathrooms looked extremely worn.
The communal area is modern (huge projector TV and sofa), although a bit stark on entry; we thought it was a surf board hire shop when we arrived, not a hostel. Outside a few hammocks hang from trees right next to the muddy road, not exactly a relaxing place to read your latest novel. The kitchen is average, pretty clean but gets messy by lunchtime – surfer dudes, it seems, don’t care for washing up.
If you really can’t stand the heat at night, then this hostel is a sound bet for great value air conditioning. Otherwise, you may want to head a little further up the muddy road to Hotel Nuha.
The Good:
- Clean
- Air conditioning is great value
The not so Good:
- Rooms have a prison like feeling
- Not much of a holiday feel
