Inti Kala, Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca

Arriving at Isla del Sol on the great Lake Titicaca by boat, you are immediately surrounded by local boys, each one attempting to lead you to your new accommodation. As we march up the hill against the beaming sun and lack of oxygen, we notice that almost every family offers a bedroom for backpackers. The prices for these beds are varied, but generally about the same. The community seem to have formed a local monopoly when it comes to the hostel accommodation pricing.

Most of the hostels offer good views over the Lake Titicaca, but if you are looking for the most stunning views on the island, keep walking uphill – its worth the blood and sweat. Hostel Inti Kala is located on the very top of the hill and the views will take your breath away, this alone is worth the nightly rate.

Surprisingly the double bedroom with shared bathroom is less than half the price than the one with private bathroom and breakfast. Our room itself was very basic but clean. The shared bathroom needs a bit more attention, in fact it needs more than just attention!

Although breakfast isn’t included when booking a double without bathroom, you will find many restaurants nearby which offer bigger and better breakfasts, for a very good price. The hostels breakfasts are not worth the extra premium. Inti Kala serves drinks and coffees if you ask, although the service and surroundings remind you more of someones lounge, than a real restaurant.

The upstairs terrace is a great to relax with a beer, and a good spot to avoid the childish acts of the hostels staff. If you are looking for a very good value accommodation with the most amazing views over Lake Titicaca, consider staying at Inti Kala.

The Good:

  • Superb location
  • Clean bedrooms
  • Quiet area

The not so Good:

  • Bathrooms quite dirty
  • Childish staff (due to probably not ever leaving the island)
