Hotel Las Vegas, Cartagena

After having looked a number of potential hostels and budget hotels in the walled city of Cartagena, we decided to stay at Hotel Las Vegas. Located only a short walk from the main plazas and shopping streets in Cartagena, this budget hotel offers central location for competitive prices.

As Las Vegas is a hotel and not a hostel, there is little in the way of facilities; no laundry, internet or kitchen. This is ok for a short period of time, and there are plenty of services available in the immediate area close to the Hotel.

The bedrooms (street side) here are very spacious, bright and clean. They are relatively modern, with comfy beds and newly tiled flooring. A requirement for us was good working air conditioning, the humidity in Cartagena does get unbearable at times. Las Vegas didn’t disappoint, the air con worked perfectly. The bathrooms are a similar standard, although a shower curtain would be a welcomed addition – the entire bathroom gets soaked when you shower.

Our room was on the first floor, with a balcony looking over the busy street below – perfect for people watching. The road is very busy all day and all night. Opposite a loud bar blasts out music for hours on end, and next door houses the local brothel, where guests and staff hang outside chasing prospective new clients. This makes the room, which just has wooden shutters to block every out, very noisy, all the time.

The Good:

  • Location
  • Modern clean rooms (cleaned daily)
  • Working air con

The not so Good:

  • Very loud
  • Limited facilities
