Hostel Bambu, Foz de Iguazu
![]()
Securing a hostel close to the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls means staying in the town of Foz de Iguazu. Taking advice from the Lonely Planet, and with a ’2007 Brazilian hostel of the year’ tagged to its name, we where expecting great things from the Hostel Bambu.
Located about 20minutes from the border crossing with Argentina, the hostel is accessed easily by taxi, costing 20 rheas. A friendly welcome and swift transfer to our tidy, well kept (although very dark) room, gave us good first impressions. The price included air conditioning, which is a must, and breakfast the next morning.

Breakfast is a rather manic affair, get up early if you want to get a piece of cheese and ham on toast, the portions are slim and the numbers large.
Looking around Hostel Bambu reminded us of more a prison than a hostel, the perimeter walls are lined with electric fence to due high crime rates, and the dirty pool area has some rusty old gym equipment in the corner for inmates.
The staff are a mixed bunch, its difficult to work out who actually works at Hostel Bambu, they tend to be found on the sofa, watching TV. Certain staff members where friendly in a very laid back Brazilian way, even offering cannabis to guests at the end of their shifts. Another staff member, (late forties, greying hair, looked liked a dodgy version of the Fonz from Happy Days) seemed to sun bathe all day, then walk around with his top off leering at every available female. Harmless, but a little weird for the female guests.
The Good:
- Clean decorated rooms with air con
- Good breakfast (if you can get it)
- Close to the centre
- Honesty bar system works well
The not so Good:
- Looks and feels like a prison
- Only one internet machine
- The rooms are very dark
