Hostal Casona, Potosi

Centrally located in the city of Potosi, this hostel is a 5-10 minute taxi ride downhill from the bus terminal.

We arrived late, but securing a room was no problem from the helpful english speaking receptionist. The rooms, as expected, were on the dark side but to our suprise had plenty of blankets and a heater which ran through the night. The room was clean, basic and all we needed for the few days we had in Potosi.

The shared bathrooms where clean, and the showers provided ample hot water. The price included breakfast, which was a basic bread, jam and coffee affair. Below our expectations of eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns and mushrooms. :D

Breakfast service, quite frankly, was shocking. Despite the basic combination of bread and coffee, every morning we had waits from 15-45 minutes for the staff to deliver it from the kitchen to the dinning room 5 metres away. The service here just isn’t good enough. Requests to get the bread ourselves from the kitchen were met with defensive staff, who were too busy to listen. If the staff are so busy, then why not have the coffee in a thermos flask? Or the bread in a large basket for self service?

The hostel also offers silver mine tours, through ‘Greengo Tours’ which run everyday for 80 Bolivianos. Casona has regular DVD showings in a well equipped TV room. You can also book buses through the hostel, but you will pay a premium, so it is best avoided.

The Good:

  • Location
  • Hot showers and heating
  • Historical building

The not so Good:

  • Breakfast service is very poor
