Gaudy’s Backpackers, San Jose Hostel
![]()
A few blocks outside the city center and close to the airport of San Jose you will find Gaudys Backpackers. Gaudy’s is situated in a very safe district of San Jose, and seems a world away from the bustling disco of down town San Jose.

You are also very close to the Coca Cola bus terminal, only a 5mintue taxi ride. A large supermarket is two blocks away and plenty of American fast food chains line the main road, just around the corner. That might not be your thing – you will struggle to find anything else.
The high roofed communal area with TV and grandma’s dusty old sofas give you a homely feeling when you arrive. The open kitchen is kept clean and generally well equipped. There are free pancakes for breakfast in the mornings, although you will have to come up with the maple syrup, sugar and anything else normally associated with eating these dry rubber placemats. Good, hot coffee is available all day to guests.
Dorms and doubles at Gaudy’s are basic but clean and the shared bathrooms are a little grubby – no bare feet in here.
The hostel offers plenty of tour information on the local attractions (volcano expeditions, thermal pools etc) and the staff are available to book the trips for you. Gaudy’s is a sound bet if you are looking to bed down for a night to catch a flight the next day due to its proximity to the airport and bus terminals.
The Good:
- Safe and quiet location
- Close to the airport
- Friendly staff
The not so Good:
- Grubby upstairs toilet
