Fishing for Piranhas in the Pantanal Wetlands, Brazil

Hiking to a small river in the Pantanal with Paco, our guide, to catch some piranha fish for lunch. That’s the plan anyway. It is very hot, but I’m excited to see or even catch a piranha, the fish you hear so many stories about.

We are given our rods, a flimsy bamboo stick with a string and a hook at the end. Pretty basic fishing, even by my standards! I put some raw meat on my hook and cast my line. After a second I feel a fast movement on my rod, I pull it out … and the meat is gone. These fish are fast!

Still trying my luck. The piranhas seem to think I’m feeding them.

Yes! Caught one. The fish is wiggling on my rod, I’m helpless what to do with the thing, I’m sure it’s still able to bite my finger off! Paco grabs my rod and kills it quickly by cutting into the head. I see the sharp little teeth for the first time – impressive!

I’m cleaning a fish for the first time in my life. What a disgusting job, yuk!

Our caught piranhas are fried and served for lunch. Even though there is not much meat on the fish, it just tastes better when you’ve caught it yourself!
