Black Sheep Hostel, Medellin

The Black Sheep hostel accommodation in Medellin is located outside of the main city center in the pleasant area of Poblado. The hostel is actually over an hour from the city center we were shocked to find out, but the excellent metro makes things extremely simple. Poblado metro station is a 10minute walk from the hostel, and the train takes another 10. The hostel is located around the corner from a chain of fast food eateries for the late night splurge after a few beers at the hostel.

We arrived late on Sunday evening, to a rather manic and chaotic reception area. It wasn’t obvious to us who was the receptionist, everyone was drinking and in the party mood. After a lengthy wait, finally the receptionist worked out who we were (despite booking in advance) and grabbed a bunch of keys and lead us upstairs. After more waiting in the corridor, and fumbling of keys in locks, the receptionist told us she couldn’t find our room key, and put us in an old room downstairs at the back of the hostel. We were just happy to have got something after all the waiting around!

Our room seemed to be sporting the ‘under construction’ look, a bed was in bits in the corner and our double looked pretty old and worn, with builders working until late next door. The shared bathroom was in a similar state, and we made a note to either leave the next morning or get into one of the mysterious upstairs rooms. First impressions were not the greatest for us.

In the morning however, things started to change. We met kiwi owner Kelvin who immediately apologised for the mix up and got us transferred to the newly renovated rooms upstairs. A fantastic turn around in service and immediately changed our opinions. The building work upstairs was having the finishing touches performed, which we didn’t mind – in a month or two this hostel will be polished and 100% complete.

Our brand new room was effectively a hotel room, great bed, plenty of space and newly painted white walls. The communal areas toward the front of the building include a TV with sofas, a small balcony and a small table with seating outside. These get very crowded, and its too small for all the guests when the hostel is full – which judging by the standard of the rooms, it will be booked out often. The kitchen too gets very busy, and you will struggle to find a simple spoon – this could be easily fixed.

The new bathrooms, which provide plenty of hot water, get cleaned every morning and are still in ‘as new’ condition thanks to the cleaning staff’s attention to detail. However, the upstairs TV area seemed to left alone, and the dust mites and other bugs crawling over the leather sofa was evidence to this. For an area that gets such high use, it should be along side the toilets in cleaning priority.

The Black Sheep Hostel offers internet (leaning on the expensive side) and snacks and drinks are available. Most evenings the outside communal areas got some pretty heavy drug use, the smoke of which would drift through the hostel and up the corridors, the smell of which isn’t to everyone’s taste.

The Good:

  • Brand new hotel standard rooms (upstairs)
  • Location (being outside the center is a good thing here)
  • Friendly owner

The not so Good:

  • Gets very noisy, corridors echo
  • Too small when fully booked
